McGinn says excitement is building for World Cup dream

Scotland midfielder John McGinn believes the dream of reaching next summer’s World Cup is alive within the squad as they prepare for Monday’s qualifier against Belarus.

After a hard-fought draw away to Denmark on Friday, Steve Clarke’s men quickly turned their focus to the next Group C test in Zalaegerszeg, Hungary, where no fans will be present. Despite the low-key atmosphere, McGinn insists motivation among the players is sky high.

The Aston Villa captain, who impressed in Copenhagen, said the team celebrated the result quietly before heading for an early night, in contrast to the travelling Tartan Army who made the most of the occasion. “It was a brilliant team performance,” McGinn said. “I used to be a PlayStation guy, but now it’s more about resting, recovering, and staying focused.”

McGinn, 30, remains a fan favourite not only for his energy on the pitch but also for his down-to-earth attitude. Even when surrounded by supporters in the Danish capital, he took time for photos and chats, showing his bond with the fans. “There’s only so many selfies you can handle,” he joked.

Looking ahead, McGinn admitted that while players don’t openly discuss World Cup ambitions in large groups, the dream is very much alive. “Sometimes in little groups we talk about it. Going to a World Cup would eclipse everything. The excitement’s there, and everyone wants to make history.”

Scotland’s current squad is a mix of experienced campaigners who featured at Euro 2020 and 2024, alongside a new wave of young talent eager to break through. Rising stars like Ben Doak, Lennon Miller and Kieron Bowie have already caught the eye, with McGinn confident they are ready to step up.

“The young boys are very different from when I first joined the squad,” he explained. “They’re confident, comfortable, and improving every time they come away with us. That can only benefit Scotland in the years ahead.”

For now, McGinn and his teammates know that three points against Belarus would be another vital step toward the ultimate goal — a place at the World Cup in North America.
