Elfyn Evans extended his lead at the top of the World Rally Championship standings despite finishing second behind Sebastien Ogier at Rally del Paraguay.

The Welshman looked destined to finished third in Central America, but second-place Adrien Fourmaux was retired by Hyandai following the final stage.

Belgium’s Thierry Neuville finished third after also benefitting from Fourmaux’s retirement.

France’s Ogier finished with a 26-second lead over the rest of the drivers, while second-placed Evans and Ott Tanak, in fourth, were separated by fewer than five seconds.

Ogier, 41, an eight-time world champion, cut his gap to Evans to nine points.

Northern Ireland’s Josh McErlean had looked to be on course for another good finish, having been running in seventh after nine of the 19 stages.

However, he was forced to retire from Saturday’s stage 10 after losing all the oil from his Ford Puma following impact damage to the sump on the previous stage.

The drivers stay in South America for race 11 of the 14-event calendar, with Rally Chile from 11-14 September.
