Jersey swimmer Filip Nowacki surged into the final of the 100m breaststroke at the World Junior Championships as the fastest qualifier.

The 17-year-old won the opening semi-final in 59.24 seconds, ahead of Greek Evangelos Ephraim Ntoumas in 59.77 and fellow Briton Max Morgan in 59.93.

Those three, plus Japan’s Shin Ohashi, who won the second semi in 59.72, were the only swimmers to break the one-minute mark.

Nowacki, who is chasing medals in three events at this week’s six-day championships in Otopeni, Romania, earlier won the last of nine heats in 59.84 seconds.

The 100m breaststroke final takes place on Wednesday evening.

Nowacki will also race in the 200m breaststroke and 50m breaststroke events later this week.

Considered to have the potential to be one of Jersey’s greatest ever sports competitors, the teenager is hoping to repeat his success at July’s European Junior Championships.

He dominated the breaststroke events in Slovakia, winning 100m and 200m gold and a 50m silver.

Nowacki set a new European junior record in the 200m breaststroke and broke the British junior record held by multiple Olympic gold medallist and world record holder Adam Peaty in the 100m breaststroke.
