Geraint Thomas has officially retired, removing his race number for the final time after the 2025 Tour of Britain concluded in Cardiff. One of Great Britain’s most celebrated cyclists, Thomas’ career spanned three decades and included victories in some of the sport’s most iconic events. Here’s a look at 10 defining moments that shaped the legend of ‘G’.

1. Discovering Cycling by Chance

Thomas wasn’t born into a cycling family.

His love for the sport began accidentally after spotting a group of riders at the Maindy Velodrome in Cardiff following a swimming lesson.

Early talent was evident: second in the Junior Tour of Wales (2004) and winner of the junior Paris-Roubaix (2005).

2. Turning Professional

Turned professional in 2006.

Overcame major setbacks, including riding most of his career without a spleen (removed after a 2005 accident).

Demonstrated resilience: rode the 2013 Tour de France despite a broken pelvis.

3. First Tour de France Experience

Entered the 2007 Tour as the youngest rider at 21.

Finished 140th of 141 finishers — an impressive feat given the grueling nature of the race.

His 18-year Tour span remains the longest in history.

4. Olympic Glory in Beijing

Gained national recognition with Team GB’s team pursuit squad.

Won gold at the 2008 Olympics, part of a record-breaking medal haul for British cycling.

Helped solidify his reputation as a rising star.

5. A Loyal Domestique

Many believed Thomas would always ride in support of others.

Crucial in helping Chris Froome win multiple Tours de France.

Showed versatility: acted as sprinter and lead-out for Mark Cavendish at the 2011 World Championships and again in the 2023 Giro d’Italia.

6. Commonwealth Gold

Won dramatic gold in Glasgow despite a puncture.

Iconic moment for Welsh sport, celebrated by singing Hen Wlad fy Nhadau.

Demonstrated Thomas’ ability to perform under pressure on challenging roads.

7. Success on the Cobbles

One of only two modern riders to win both a Spring Classic and the Tour de France.

Claimed victory at E3 Harelbeke, riding away from legends like Peter Sagan.

Announced his arrival as a rider capable of winning on any terrain.

8. Shifting Focus to Stage Racing

Transitioned fully to Grand Tours by 2017.

Won Paris-Nice in 2016, setting the stage for Tour de France ambitions.

Faced numerous accidents, including a crash caused by a stray water bottle at the 2020 Giro d’Italia.

9. Historic Tour de France Victory

2018 Tour de France: started as a secondary rider to Froome.

Dominated Alpine stages, winning stage 11 to Serre Chevalier and the legendary Alpe d’Huez stage.

Became the first Welsh rider to don yellow on the Alpe and complete a Tour victory.

10. Career Finale and Reflection

Thomas’ final race: the 2025 Tour of Britain into Cardiff.

Rode at a measured pace to take in the atmosphere, visiting Caerphilly Mountain and Maindy Track — symbolic locations in his journey.

Thousands lined the streets to honor one of Britain’s greatest cyclists and Wales’ sporting legends.
